Commodes
Commodes are used when limited mobility makes it difficult to use a conventional toilet. A commode allows someone to use the toilet without leaving the room they are in, or enables an attendant to move a patient to another room for more privacy. Commodes are designed to be of benefit to both user and attendant by reducing the need for manual handling. Many commodes have features such as detachable armrests and footrests to aid transfer, whilst mobile commodes have braked swivel castors that provide manoeuvrability and safety. The environment in which they are to be used also influences the suitability of a commode for a user. Will the commode need to be stored away when not in use? Will it foldaway? Can more than one be stacked? Will it fit through doorways? Also, the attendant will want to know how easily the bowl can be emptied - Is it easily accessible? Does it have a lid? Is it easy to clean? A full assessment should be carried out when selecting a commode.
